Of the past 3,400 years, humans have been entirely at peace for 268 of them, or just 8 percent of recorded history.
Surely I am not the only one to be saddened, although not real surprised, by this.
I guess world peace is on my mind today after we just celebrated Memorial Day and D-Day is just around the corner. I certainly appreciate the freedoms I enjoy being an American, but if I live to be 90, I'll NEVER understand why we as a species can't think of a better way to work out our disagreements.
As a child, I'd play in the living room while my parents watched the news on their big boxy black and white Zenith. Children are like sponges, and I absorbed a lot of news about places like Cambodia and Viet Nam. In my innocent mind, I understood that soldiers wore uniforms and carried guns and that Viet Nam was "just the place the Army people went."
Anyway, with the world on fire as it is, just thought I'd mention the above statistic and hope that that number of peaceful days increases!
